REGIONAL TRANSIT AUTHORITY TRANSPORTATION PROPERTY TAX ASSESSMENT, would, if approved by voters in these four counties surrounding Detroit, raise property taxes by 1.2 mills in order to fund a rail system between Detroit and Ann Arbor as well as a bus system. A 2015 study by the District of Columbia’s Chief Financial Officer found that Detroit had the highest effective property tax rate in the country among the largest cities in each state. The average tax increase would be about $100 annually per homeowner. By increasing property taxes, the incidence of the tax would fall on homeowners already facing extremely high property taxes. Note: A majority vote in all four counties combined is required to pass this measure.
